Global Reading Challenge

Attention 4th and 5th grade families! Global Reading Challenge is upon us! Book titles were announced during the first week of November, and hopefully your Falcon is excited to try a new book, or two, or eight! Global Reading Challenge is an annual event hosted by the Seattle Public Library. Students can read amazing new books and work with their team to demonstrate their understanding.

Why Global Reading Challenge?

· Promotes a love of reading

· Discover books for reluctant readers

· Read stories that reflect diverse cultural experiences

· Build teamwork and cooperation skills

I hope your 4th/5th grader is planning to join the challenge this year. I will be teaming with Ms. Kelly who has lots of experience with this program. Please reach out if you have any questions!

In other library news, book circulation was way up in October. By 2,165 books compared to September! 1st-5th grade students can currently check out up to 5 books at a time, while kindergartners have worked up to 2 books. My goal is to increase check out limits to 5 books for kindergartners by the end of the year, and I’m also planning on increasing 3rd-5th check out limits over the next couple of months. All those checked out books need to be reshelved each week, so reach out if you are interested in volunteering in the library (cahalladin@seattleschools.org). I’m also hoping to show students how they can place holds online soon!

I’ve placed a large order through Scholastic using the proceeds from our September Book Fair. I’m looking forward to those books arriving soon. I am also planning on placing my first order using the district allocated $9 per student this month. Students and teachers have been keeping me busy with requests and ideas, and I’m looking forward to getting new titles in the library soon.

Happy reading!

Ms. Halladin
